Explosion safety for mills and grinding plants

Inherently, every mill has metallic parts that approach and touch each other at high velocities - a high probability for the creation of potential ignition sources.

If you observe the prerequisites for a dust explosion, a mill offers all the necessary components: Dust, a closed container, effective combustion sources and oxygen. Therefore, several mill manufacturers offer devices with an explosion pressure resistant design (up to 10 bar). Not always an economic option, and even in the case of a pressure-resistant construction, the design-based explosion safety continues to be an issue:

Decoupling is necessary in order to protect further system components. The intake opening of the mill or mill system should also be considered. In case of an explosion, flames and pressure can also escape. Therefore, the REMBE® Q-Rohr® LF is recommended here: a modification of the Q-Rohr®, with which air can be sucked in during normal operation, but in the event of an explosion the environment is protected from the effects of explosions.

The overall picture counts:

The protection of individual system components is only as good as the protection of the entire system. Pay particular attention to having sufficient decoupling devices, and the protection against “over engineering”. Only if the entire system is observed, and the individual protective measures are aligned to each other, will your Explosion Safety concept be safe AND economic.
